My newest drawing: Red vs Captain Tannis.
Yeah, I know... My Orc looks kind of like Blanca from Street Fighter, but it has nothing to do with it... bear with me,
I like Orcs...
And again, let us talk some more about video games... In my previous post I was telling, you strangers, how I loved to play video games... I can't anymore because now I'm a responsible human being with two little boys to take care of. It's really amazing the amount of time that you need to put on raising two little human beings; hence, no more time for video games.
Tolkien described the Orcs as a mutated species, according to him, they were elves tortured and tainted by the big bad guy (Sauron's boss), but he never explained how Orcs reproduced. Later, on his books, Saruman (when he was still "the white") takes some Orcs and makes them better, bigger and nastier, the deadly Uruk-Hai.
In World of Warcraft, the Orcs have a demonic past: their blood has been tainted, but they are not related to elves. They are big and powerful creatures from other planets (or dimensions). Later on, they acquire a shamanic kind of culture. I would like to think that they are kind of the old north american tribes (but bigger and more aggressive). An important campaign in WoW III is that of Thrall, he can also (for some reason) use a hammer to electrocute your opponents... I guess they were reading Thor a little too much.
In battle for Wesnoth, Orcs are your usual warring tribes that are usually supporting bad causes, and there is even a campaign where you play as a "noble" Orc, fighting humans, elves, and Orcs.
What I like about all these games, is that little by little, they are changing the Orcs. They are not demonic anymore, some of them are good guys, and why not? everybody can be redeemed from their former past, right?
The latest example is the Netflix movie with Will Smith, which had the same idea as another video game, do you remember this gem?
The movie did have major hole plots, but it was a nice take on an old idea. Everybody thought that it should have been a series... let's hope Netflix can do something about it.
Anyway! I got off track again.
In my book, Orcs are brutish barbarians, but they are not naturally evil. On the picture above, Red is the mighty chieftain of the Red Bones, one of the Orc Tribes that the saurians manage to meet. The other guy fighting him is Captain Tannis of the Saurian Empire. They end up as good buddies, but I shouldn't tell you more.
Come find it out for yourself
